I have been a printmaker using the intaglio process of etching for at least fifteen years. Etching is quite labour-intensive but I think that suits my slow way of working and gives me time to think about and explore whatever visual image I have decided to translate into a print. I am attracted by line and texture and contrast - no matter what the subject, at least one of those elements would have caught my eye Mainly I use steel plates for my etchings and occasionally copper. The surface of the plate can be worked and put in the etching tray numerous times - this may take months before I feel the image is ready to edition. I do not complete pulling an entire edition in one session, just one or two at a time when needed. This results in what is known as a "variable" edition and in my work this can mean either tiny differences in the colour mixes of ink or even a much different inking of the plate. I think this highlights the fact that every time the plate is inked by hand, damp paper laid over the top and then pulled through the press, each piece produced is an original Some general information about printmaking is on the FAQ page. |
